Shadow drawing no 5: Svalbard fjords and glaciers

Jessica Ackerley

Shadow Drawing No. 5’ is part of a larger body of work merging synesthetic experiences between sight and sound.  The composition process begins with a graphic score sketch of abstract automated drawings on a time stamped grid to outline the form.  This is inspired by a similar process that early Surrealist painters used to unlock memories of the subconscious through improvising drawing and painting.

The initial abstract graphic sketches for this piece are inspired by memories of time spent in the Arctic Circle, sailing along the coast and fjord inlets of Svalbard, Norway.  The imagery is then reinterpreted through staff music notation while maintaining the structural form of the graphic image.”

Recollections

Rasam Soheilian

“Recollections” has clear eastern influences with regards to form and modes that are used. The form is inspired by a historical form called "Nobat Moratab" that was prevalent in the Middle East a few hundred years ago. This form was mainly used in singing pieces and it had 4 sections. The first and last section in this form have to be similar and certain rhythmical patterns should be used. This piece resembles this structure in a way that the last section is citing the beginning of the piece although it may not be easy to detect that since I used theme and variation techniques to kind of modify the last section but still there are clear citations.
